Say What?

You know that stage where kids are trying to tell you something but you can't understand what they're saying? Well, we've reached it! Saylor is talking more and more these days, and most of the time I know what she wants. But we've definitely had a few episodes where I have just have no idea.

Like yesterday, she was sitting in her high chair and suddenly started insessantly repeating something that sounded like "pa" over and over and over. This is not one of her normal words, and it was so random, so I was stumped. She just kept repeating the word, intermingled with "peas" (please), faster and faster and more and more desperate. I kept holding things up and she would shake her head no and repeat "pa!!!!!" Suddenly, I burst out laughing, because seeing her like that just cracked me up. At which point she also started laughing, but only for a second, then she was right back to her desparate pleas. This went on for a few minutes. I thought maybe she would give it up, but no such luck.

Finally, I saw a tiny oragne bottle of bubbles sitting on the corner of the bookshelf. (The kind you get at a wedding to blow at a bride and groom on their way out). That was it! She was saying POP! I brought them over to her and she gave me her hearty little laugh...so pleased to finally have them in her hands.

Guess I learned a new word today. :)

Puppy Problems

*Warning: this post may seem a  bit melodramtic if you are not a dog lover. But if you are, you may sympathize.

I've been feeling a bit more worried than usually about Harry lately. As I mentioned in a previous post, he had a big seizure in Houston while my parents were keeping him for us a couple weeks ago. It's a problem that he is having "breakthrough" seizures, because we've been trying to switch him from one medication to another (to avoid the feeding freenzies), but apparently his seizures are getting more frequent and more intense.

While we were gone again this past weekend, our vet had us put him on both medications temporarily. Not the first time we've had to do this, but between his 2 anti-seizure meds and his anti-depressant, he is just so drugged up right now! Poor thing is tired and lethargic. He lays in the same spot for much of the day, sleeping. And he is super uncoordinated! He trips over himself or anything random lying on the floor. He has fallen down trying to jump into my car and even going up and down the curb outside! And when he tries to get up from lying down, half the time his hind legs just give out of him and he falls back down and gives up.

I hate seeing him like this! Luckily we are now trying to slowly wean off some of the meds, but I know he will have to be on a high dose of something for the rest of his life.

Don't get me wrong, this dog can be a huge pain in my rear:
  • He steals all our food
  • He wants as much attention as we give Saylor
  • He has become less and less well mannered since we don't spend nearly the time training him we used to
  • He costs us a ridiculous, makes-my-blood-pressure-increase amount of money each month for his meds, not to mention periodic blood work and paying to fix occasional mistake he's made in the house
  • He is so OCD it's hard for anyone else to keep him for us if we need to go out of town (e.g. he won't pee in the back yard, only the front, off a leash)
  • I could literally vacuum and mop our floors once daily and they still would have his drool and dog hair everywhere
  • He can clear a room with his gas (which naturally happens mainly when guests are over because he is nervous)
Having said all that, I truly am happy we have him.
  • He is never aggresive towards Saylor, and he does love her in his own way (he has to be the first one in her room each morning to greet her, he lays outside her door at night to protect her)
  • He is a great running partner (or used to be) :(
  • He makes us laugh at least once every day
  • He is very, very sweet natured
  • He will just sit in the front yard with us while we play outside, off a leash, and not run away
  • He is handy to have around when feeding a toddler
  • Hardly any of the above issues are his fault and are only side effects of the meds
  • He is my first dog, and what they say about dogs is true: he is loyal, he loves us unconditionally, he is man's best friend (or we are his best friends at least) :)
  • He really is a part of our family and I hate to see him suffering. Even more I hate to think about having to let him go one day.
  • I can't imagine what his life would be like if he was still living in his pre-rescue home.

Here's where you can find him at least 3 times each day! :)
Good ole' Harry Bone. Hope you are feeling better soon!

Atlanta

Here are some pictures from our trip to Atlanta this past weekend...we had such a great time celebrating with our friends Jeff and Grace as they got married!
Here's Saylor on the plane on the way there. We got lucky and were able to bring her carseat onboard! She did great...I don't think she realized we even on a plane. Matt and I packed a huge back pack full of toys and books to keep her entertained. Here she is playing with her most fancy toy, a Sonic cup. Those push down tabs on the top are fun for at least 15 mintues!

One of the best parts of the weekend was spending time with Nick and Caroline and meeting their new daughter, Ellie!

Here's Saylor meeting baby Ellie. She is such a precious little girl! Loved her little pink outfit and bow. Caroline and Nick are already awesome parents of course. :)

Here are the groomsmen (Matt, Alex, and Nick) with the groom (Jeff - holding Ellie in this picture).

Caroline and I at the wedding. One of the most fun dance parties I've been to in a long time!

And here we are with the bride and groom...!!! Grace looked gorgeous and she was so calm and collected the whole weekend. We also got to spend time with Molly (my best friend from college), but I didn't get a picture with her at the wedding. :(

No car seat on the way back, but she did great anyways. Here we are watching Old MacDonald Farm Animals - by far one of Saylor's favorite topics right now!

Suffering

Have you ever noticed that hard things seem to come in waves? Or that it cycles through or something? Like, you have one or two friends or family members who are dealing with really hard things in their life (really hard) and then you hear of another, and another and another. Until finally it seems like it's sort of all around you. Cancer, Alzheimers, surgeries gone wrong, miscarriage, or, like today, a pregnant friend's water breaking way to early and being rushed to the hospital unexpectedly. And the list goes on. For some reason, these things just seem to weigh heavier during certain times of life, but the older I get, the faster they seem to come and the slower they are to let up.

Our paster preached on suffering last week and it was REALLY good. Something he knows a bit about, considering he has a malignant brain tumor. Such an important message that I know doesn't erase the pain but does help put things in perspective and reminds that through it all, God is good and sovereign, and there is hope.

You can listen to it for free here. (Click on 4.18, The Afflictions of Christ). It is a bit heady in the beginning, but stick with it. I think you will find it encouraging :)

New York

Here are some random thoughts and observations from our 3 day trip to New York, sitting at the airport waiting to go home:
- There is nothing like 3 days of uninterrupted, child-free time with the hubby. I hardly knew what to do with myself after 2 mornings of sleeping in, with no child, dog, or cat to wake me. THANK YOU to our parents for holding down the fort, which is not always smooth sailing (case in point: Harry’s seizure and poop explosion all over my parents’ bathroom. Oops. Sorry mom and dad).
- Lady Liberty. This was my first time to meet her up close (on a boat, on the water, at dusk) and she was so moving and beautiful to see. You can’t help but get a bit sentimental about all that she stands for.
- I wish Dallas had more public transportation options. I really enjoy riding the train and subway…time to read, people watch or snooze and no traffic stress!
- Speaking of people watching…New Yorkers are so fascinating. How is it that all the women are so well dressed? I definitely feel the need for a posh trench coat, huge sunglasses, and/or a gorgeous designer purse. And how do they walk all over that city wearing those heels? It must be a metamorphosis their feet go through or something upon moving to the Big Apple.
- Germs. Germ germs germs everywhere. Not so much in NYC as just on the plane, in the cab, in a hotel room. I think as a hospital worker I am more conditioned to being aware of this, but I wish I was blissfully ignorant.
- Speaking of germs, how about the classy cab driver who got out of his car to open our door while zipping up his pants and buckling up his belt. You can imagine how thrilled I was to get into his cab. Sick.
- PEPSICO (the reason we were in NYC – for Matt’s job – in the first place) is truly an enormous company. I enjoyed getting out of my bubble and mingling with people from China, Thailand, Brazil, and Mexico. There were definitely some interesting table manners to be noted, as well as funny communication exchanges, but that is ok.
- My hubby is really good at his job. Really. Proud of you Matt. You are the straw that stirs my pepsi cola. ;)
- Wicked has now secured 2nd place on my list of favorite musicals (behind Les Mis). It was so good! Does anyone know how they get Elpahba’s skin so green like that? I wonder if she has to scrub for a long time in the shower every night?
- Serendipity. We successfully located this restaurant this time and every bite of that frozen hot chocolate was worth it. Oh my, what yummy goodness!
- I can't wait to see Saylor after 3 days and 3 nights. I miss her voice and her silliness and her sweet self. Only a few more hours!!!!

Easter Part 2

Here are a few more pictures from our Easter celebration yesterday. (I looked back at my blog post from Easter last year and realized I had only posted one measly picture. Maybe I'm trying to make up for it this year? I was also contemplating this Easter compared to last and realized that life with a 15 month old is sooooo much easier than life with a 3 month old, or at least it feels that way to me. Last Easter was our infamous projectile poop incident, at church 45 minutes away from our house, all over her white smocked Easter dress and my entire arm, stranded alone in the cry room with no more wipes. Quite the pickle! We laughed about it then but it's definitely easier to laugh about now)!

Anyways, Matt "hid" a few eggs for an egg hunt before church yesterday. You could probably say it was Level Zero on the difficulty scale:

But I think we underestimated Saylor girl because she dove right in and immediately started putting all the eggs in her basket. Way to go Say!

Contemplating her success?

One special egg had seeds inside it that we planted in our garden - to symbolize our new life in Christ and His ressurection! :)

Hanging out with Harper after church
Exploring her Easter basket after her nap

And maybe woke up on the wrong side of the bed?! Not sure what this particular crying spell was about, but she got over it quick enough. :)

Here's our lame attempt at a family Easter picture. We took this right before we left for a potluck dinner with our small group. Of course I didn't take any pictures there, but it was such a delicious meal and we are so thankful for this small group of friends within our big church family, especially on days like Easter!

Most of all, we are thankful for another year to celebrate the power and hope offered to us all through Christ's death and ressurection. "Love's redeeming work is done, Alleluia!"
